The Magna Carta monument, located in Magna Carta Place, celebrates the Centenary of Federation and recognises the special relationship between Britain and Australia. The materials used in fabrication convey a sense of timelessness - bronze, bluestone, granite and ironbark.
The monument was dedicated in 1997, on the 700th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta. One of the four remaining copies of the 1297 issue of the Magna Carta is displayed in Parliament House. Images on the monument taken from medieval documents convey the values and principles that are relevant to today's society.
